Thanjavur ( Tanjore ) is an ancient town, 350 KMs south of Madras in South India well connected by Road and Rail. Nearest Airport to Thanjavur is at Tiruchi about 50 KMs away.

BIG TEMPLE : The greatest attraction of the town is the Brahadeeswarar temple built by King Raja Raja Cholan between 985 & 1014 AD which is an architectural marvel. The unique feature of the Gopuram ( tower ) is that the shadow of the dome (cupola ) never falls on the ground.The dome constructed from a single piece granite weighing about 81 tonnes was installed with the aid of 6 K.M. long inclined plane to the top of this 63 Metres high temple.

This temple has been used as a worship place continuously for more than 1000 years. This superb monument is one of only a handful temples in India with World Heritage listing and is worth a 'couple of visits.

The temple premises include superb Frescoes in the Inner courtyard Using techniques similar to those used in Europe Fresco work and the Archaeological museum with interesting exhibits and photographs.

OTHER LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:The Town of Tanjore is surrounded by Lush Green Rice fields and winding rivers with Coconut and Banana Gardens. Besides the temple the other places of interest are the Art Gallery and the Ancient Library at the Tanjore Palace Complex.

TEMPLES. There are numerous enormous Chola temples at Darasuram (34 KMs ), Kumbakonam (36 KMs ), Gangaikondacholapuram (71 KMs ) and Tiruvarur (55 KMs ) which are worth visiting for its stone carving.

THARANGAMBADI ( TRANQUEBAR ) ( 105 KMs ):A Danish settlement from 1624 to 1825.

KARAIKAL (85 KMs):This was part of the French Settlement.
